Machining in an industrial point of view is a process of using power-operated equipment to shape metals. It is somewhat a technical term that concerns metals. It generally refers to metal cutting and the processes of treating metals. Machining is generally categorized into four traditional parts. Let’s take a little discussion about each category.
The first category pertains to the process of grinding the metal into pieces. Metals that are too hard to be machined normally goes through the process of grinding. Grinding constitutes a wheel or grinding belt situated against the work piece to remove it, and water is treated into the surface to eliminate sparks and prevent too much heat. The grinding process nowadays is more sophisticated due to the use of eliminating chemicals instead of equipment. However, the use of chemicals is an inconvenience if we are trying to metal prototyping services have it cut asymmetrically. In these instances, the manual machine is a better idea.
The process of using the manual machine is called milling. It uses the dill press, and a cutter that goes downwards where it should be cut. However, it’s less accurate and less recommended compared with the grinding process. Another machining process is turning which is an unusual way of cutting metals, usually done in a lathe.
It is the lathe that turns the metal in and out, off and on towards the blade, and the blade cuts the metal into different symmetrical portion of the material. Another common cutting process is drilling. The term conveys the use of a drill, or the drill press against the material to cut. Similarly, it is one way to treat the material using equipment containing a drill bit, to cut the work piece.
Those mentioned above are some of the traditional ways of doing machining. Those are the typical processes commonly used to cut metals. Due to advance in technology and the equipment upgrades, machines have evolved into more advanced processes. These are the unconventional ways of doing machining. The unconventional way of treating metals uses laser, water, electricity, and chemicals.
Limitations apply though, and the use of these advanced processes is limited with more specifications. Like the water jet technique, a way of cutting metals through the aid of water, but it’s limited to softer materials. It cannot be used to hard metals, and is less usable. It is mostly used to metals with cracks.
